Frequently asked

How is the bar mitzvah date calculated?

A boy becomes bar mitzvah on his 13th Hebrew birthday and a girl bat mitzvah on her 12th (some communities mark a bat mitzvah at 13). The calculator finds the Hebrew date of birth, adds 13 (or 12) Hebrew years using the traditional anniversary rules, and shows the resulting Gregorian date plus the Shabbat on or after it.

What if the child was born after sunset?

The Hebrew day begins at nightfall, so a birth after sunset counts as the next Hebrew date. Tick the “born after sunset” box and the calculation shifts accordingly.

Why does it also show a Torah portion?

The celebration is usually held on the Shabbat on or after the Hebrew birthday, when the bar/bat mitzvah is called to the Torah. The calculator shows which weekly portion (parsha) is read that Shabbat.
